Qualcomm introduced its Snapdragon 821 chipset today. Folks with Snapdragon 820 powered phone need not worry, as it a complementary addition to its flagship lineup and not a replacement.
Compared to Snapdragon 820, the new chipset provides 10 percent performance boost. It is made possible with quad-core Kryo clocked at 2.4 GHz over a Quad-core Kryo with 2.15 GHz. The Adreno 530 GPU will stay but with a slight increase in clock speed. Both chips use 14 nm manufacturing process.
The more powerful processor is, quicker the battery drains, so to balance out the things, the 821 comes with Quick Charge 3.0. The chipset features the X12 LTE modem as seen in Snapdragon 820, which supports up to 600 Mbps. It includes all the features of its predecessor.
The Snapdragon 821 might be used in mobile VR head mounted displays and other new devices along with the smartphones. So expect to see standalone mobile VR headset that don’t require a smartphone like the Samsung gear VR. You can expect the consumer devices powered by the Snapdragon 821 in the second half of 2016.
