International Data Corporation (IDC) is the go to source to track the smartphone market. According to its latest report, Samsung continues to dominate the market, closely followed by Apple. Riding on the success of its Honor series, Huawei retains its third spot. The interesting bit however comes from the Chinese brands such as Oppo and Vivo. These two brands have pushed down the popular online brand Xiaomi and Lenovo. It looks like sponsoring the IPL has worked wonders for Vivo.
For those interested in numbers, Samsung shipped over 81 million smartphones in Q1 of 2016. With 24.5 percent market share, it remains to be the numero uno smartphone brand in the world. With incredibly high profit margin, Apple secured the second spot with 15.3 percent market share. Huawei grabbed the third sport with over 27 million units and 8.2 market share. Oppo rose to the fourth rank with 18.8 percent market share. Similarly, Vivo beat Xiaomi and Lenovo for the firth spot with over 14.3 million shipments. In addition to Xiaomi and Lenovo, other Android manufacturers such as Sony, HTC, and LG failed to make it to the top five list.
In total, 334.9 million devices were shipped in Q1 of 2016. As usual, a large share of the market, approx 42.3 percent belong to hundreds of small and nameless companies.
