Remember the video game that looked as if green germs are running around on your PC screen? Yes, that trashy game Warcraft turned out to be one of the best selling massively MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) of all times.
In this game, players earn experience points by doing some boring stuff over and over again. Scoring certain points levels up your character. In short, it rewards those who spend most time in the game rather than the skilled ones. Anyway, the story of Warcraft revolves around wars between Humans and Orcs. You can say that it is loosely based on Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. Considering that we already have LOTR trilogy, the Warcraft movie idea initially sounded pointless to me.
When Uwe Boll, showed his interest in directing the movie, the project was dead to me. Why? because the dude has single-handedly destroyed House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark, BloodRayne, and Far Cry movies. Thankfully, Blizzard gave him the most sensible answer: “NO”.
The best thing that happened to this project when Blizzard got Duncan Jones on-board. For those not in the know, Duncan is the mastermind behind the incredibly clever sci-fi movie Moon (2009). If we need a fresh visual treatment on the Humans Vs Orcs battles, he is one of the best guys in the industry. Till now, there hasn’t been a single good movie based on a video game. This movie, however, has a best shot at breaking that jinx.
