The year 2017 was the year of shrinking bezels and the popularization of infamous notch displays. Come 2018, almost every other mobile phone manufacturer followed the notch display trend, so much so that even a sub 10k smartphone now comes with a notch display. However, everyone is not font of the ugly notch interfering with the viewing experience. Manufacturers such as Vivo and Oppo, were quick to address the issue as they introduced pop-up cameras and waterdrop notches. These displays were relatively less distracting compared to the large notch design. These types of designs were believed to be the norm through the start of 2019 until Huawei pulled off the peculiar Nova 4.
The Huawei Nova 4 sports a 6.4-inch IPS LCD Full HD+ display with a unique off set pinhole towards the extreme left that houses the front 25-megapixel f/2.0 selfie shooter. The lens and its housing measures just 4.5 mm in diameter which is considerably lesser than the waterdrop/teardrop notches. It comes with a very slim chin bezel at the bottom and a screen-to-body ratio of 86.3%, which enhances its overall screen real estate.
Coming to the rear, you get a beautiful 3D back glass design with a gradient finish. The design is similar to the popular Huawei P20 Pro with its vertically stacked triple rear cameras with an LED flash. The fingerprint sensor is located at the back as this skips the in-screen fingerprint sensor tech. The top-end variant comes with a 48-megapixel f/1.8 main camera coupled with a 16-megapixel f/2.2 ultra-wide sensor and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. The standard one settles for the main camera for a 20-megapixel f/1.8 sensor with no changes to the ultra-wide and depth sensors.
The Huawei Nova 4 is powered by its in-house Kirin 970 SoC with GPU Turbo 2.0, which powered most Huawei’s and Honor’s flagship smartphones in 2018. It packs in 8GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage and runs on EMUI 9.0.1 on top of Android 9.0 Pie. It comes equipped with a 3750mAh battery under its hood and comes with an 18W charger which supports fast charging.
The Huawei Nova 4 with a 48MP camera comes for 3399 yuan (Rs 35,000 approx.) while the 20-MP variant comes for 3099 yuan (Rs 32,000 approx.). It can be had in Honey Red, Blue, Black and White colours once it is out on December 27 in China.
