Directed by Guillermo Del Toro, Pacific Rim is hands down the best monster movie ever made. Unlike the tiring action seen in most Hollywood films, the destruction in this movie feels like a poetry in motion. The movie is an unforgettable display incredible creature design, insane attention to detail, striking colours, jaw-dropping creature design, and elaborate sets. Despite burning more money, Michael “explosive” Bay’s Transformer movies (with huge robots) could never achieve the sense of awe, Del Toro delivered in every scene of Pacific Rim.
Like most excellent movies though, Pacific Rim did not perform well on the box office. More so in the US, where the audience probably couldn’t stand other countries joining in to save the world. Because of the not-so-great collections, there has been speculations that Pacific Rim may not get a sequel. However, just a few hours ago, Del Toro himself cleared the air with this tweet:
Just landed. I am so happy the news broke! Pacific Rim 2 starts shooting soon!

Those who have watched the movie would know that he is referring to the arrival of a Kaiju (monster) in Pacific Rim style. Undoubtedly, this is a great news for the movie buffs. However, there’s a catch, the sequel won’t be directed by Del Toro. What’s worse is that he is passing the mantle to Steven S. DeKnight, known for TV series Angel and Smallville. This gets even worse with the inclusion of John Boyega as the protagonist. If you are lucky enough to not know this guy, he is the clueless storms trooper from Disney’s Star Wars. After strong performances from Idris Elba and Charlie Hunnam in the original, it is going to be tough to tolerate John Boyega in the sequel.
